They look fun hanging in a nursery, mesmerizing beside a bed, or in a living room as a uniquely natural work of art. These delicately textured raffia mobiles are designed by FLOC and woven by groups of women in small cooperatives across rural areas of Uganda in an ethical, fair trade environment. The artisans weave together grass and raffia using a sewing needle.
FLOC is a creative social business crafting unique artisan mobiles from the heart of Kenya. Each original, delicate, moving art piece is hand carved, twisted and cut from locally-sourced natural and recycled materials. At FLOC we aim to release the creativity and traditional skills of local producers by opening doors to global markets. We look to nurture imagination, turn away from industrial production and give each of our creations an engaging human touch. FLOC is where modern design, artisanal culture and ethical business unite. FLOC was founded by Australian designer Nina Howard. Before founding FLOC, Nina built up over 12 years’ experience as a design and market access consultant for major international organizations including UNESCO, Traidcraft and AusAID. She has worked closely with many artisan communities around the world including in Benin, Cambodia, New York, Papua New Guinea, Australia and Vietnam. In Kenya Nina partners with specialized artisans to design grounded creations from locally-sourced natural materials curated into original, delicate, moving art pieces.
